Amrita Shergill has been called "one of the greatest avant-garde women artists of the early 20th century" and a "pioneer" in modern Indian art. Drawn to painting from an early age, Sher-Gil started getting formal lessons in the art, at the age of eight.
1.Early Life
Amrita was born on 30th January, 1913 at Budapest (Hungary). Her father had married Marie Antoinette there in 1912. Sher Gill's father Umrao Singh left Hungary in 1920 and returned to India.
2.Education
Amrita joined 'Jesus and Marry Convent at Shimla.This school was known for discipline. She was expelled from the school for showing scant respect for the rules and regulations. This ended the formal schooling of Sher Gill.
3.Famous Work
In October, 1929, she resumed her studies. Now she learnt music. The music continued to be her first choice. Her painting style underwent a revolutionary change in subject, spirit and technical expression. Her last painting painted at Shimla was 'Hill Scene' .
